VoIP is voice over internet protocol. It is used to make calls over a broadband internet connection. The equipment necessary to use VoIP is a broadband internet connection, a computer, adaptor, software, and a microphone or specialized phone. Some advantages VoIP provides over traditional phone service is an array of unique services and features for free that would only be available at an extra cost with traditional services. The disadvantages of this service is that it does not work during power outages, not all VoIP offers directory assistance, and not all connect directly to the 911 emergency service.

I would not recommend this service for Southland Media. The glaring disadvantages seem to outweigh the small perks that come with this service for free. In my opinion there are other means of communication that offer better services with less compromises.

IRC was invented by Jarkko Oikarinen. It is real time internet chat/conferencing. It is used for group communication but can also be used for person to person chat. It was used originally to report on the Soviet coup attempt of 1991 and also in the Gulf War. A channel is the basic means of communication in an established IRC connection. Commands are single-line messages that are sent to the server. These are sometimes handled entirely by client and sometimes passed directly to the server.

IRC seems to be a reliable medium of communication. It has been used for decades and allows conversation to take place between a large amount of people or as few as two. I would recommend the IRC for Southland Media.
